Mary Coker first shows up in the Franklin Co., Ga tax records as having land of her own in 1835,Captain Lard's district and Joseph Coker who also lived in the same district paid taxes for her. Charlton Coker paid taxes for Mary in 1836 with Joseph paying them again in 1837. In 1838, Capt. Lard was no longer listed as having a district, but Mary was listed in Capt. Brown's district with Charlton Coker paying her taxes again. Also in 1838, Thomas Phillips paid taxes for James Phillips and in 1839 Thomas paid taxes for Mary Coker. We are not sure of the Coker and Phillips connection. Mary remarried in 1841 to a widow with children, Wilson Bridges and we assume he paid taxes for her after that time. Mary's land was on the Old Augusta Road in the Lightwoodlog Creek area of Franklin Co. We believe this Mary Coker was the mother of David Jackson Coker | ||||||||||||||||
